Superpower

Since it won't be us, I'm looking forward to the England v. Ghana clash. Do you think the Black Stars would be up for that game?

Who is Brazil?

I like the way you think. And thanks for the link.

So, which colors will you be wearing in the Australia v. Italy match?

I'm pulling for Australia. I have deep, historic and personal reasons to love Italy, the nation, but always find myself hard pressed to root for the soccer team. They're a bit too glamorous and sexy for my taste.

I have no ties to Australia, except through the Commonwealth and as a one-time colony, but I love the way they play. They play the way we should have. They play like men, optimistic, tough, indefatigable. They challenge every possession and intend to win. They've got spirit, yes they do. They've got spirit, how 'bout you?

By the way, I know that I said on your blog that Italy was among my four "other" teams now in the Cup. They still are, too, for the aforementioned spiritual resons, but just not against the Aussie scrappers.

George Bush was in a meeting with Don Rumsfeld, who told him that 4 Brazilian soldiers had been killed in an attack the previous day. W slumped into his chair and put his head in his hands, obviously shaken to the core with the news.

Rumsfeld asked, "What's the matter, Mr. President?"

Bush replied, "Just exactly how many is a brazillion?"

JRB, your query puts you in the Bush league. congratulations.
(By the way, aren't we getting very close to offering congratulations on another matter?)

JRB--

I just wanted to thank you for pointing the way to Michael Davies' blog over at ESPN. I was totally oblivious to its existence, and here I am touting myself as a soccerphile.

It took a while, but I just finished reading all the entries and have totally exacerbated my asthma. Pardon me now while I go take a hit from my inhaler.

You got to love the nickname "Socceroos" for Aussie footballers.

Soccer is a poor cousin to rugby, Australian rules, and even cricket down under. I'm pulling for Australia now.
