When our little girl was in her first four hours of life outside the womb, I stood at the window of the nursery gazing down and praying over my daughter as she rested and adjusted to the world. Another family walked up, apparently expecting another grandchild that day or something, and they were carrying an older baby boy, probably six months old. The woman carrying the boy looked down at my daughter and said to the kid, "Look Hayden at that pretty little girl! She could be your girlfriend!"
Not for the first or last time that day, a new, surprising, potent, primordial emotion rose, nay raged, through my fresh father heart. I stepped forward and said, "I'm not so sure about that. That's my little girl, and I haven't gotten to know Hayden yet."
That was relatively polite and awkwardly funny as they walked away, yet it was far less than what I was thinking: How dare you presume that your average brat could ever hope to reach any conceivable level of greatness, brilliance and righteousness sufficient to win the divine affection of this magic angel-child?!
I still feel that way.
Kile's son has the pedigree and much love from us forever, but it's still going to be a long, long slog for the little trooper. I'm sure he feels exactly the same way. God bless the kids.

Enjoy this stage of her life, Jeff. As a daddy, this was my favorite time with all of them.
